Having had a conservative, privileged and cossetted upbringing much of her early adult years were spent rebelling against that said childhood. Lady Edwina was an interesting character. The research is of the highest quality, thorough, detailed and to use a cliched term ‘exhaustive’ as evidenced by the reams of end-notes (Andrew tells me it took him three years to write it). It takes the reader on a journey and does so tremendously well. It has a clear and easy to follow structure, it is beautifully written, with a lovely lucid narrative every passage and every chapter flows seamlessly into the next. It is undoubtedly an exceptional dual biography. I, therefore, placed it in my admittedly long bucket list and soon came across a copy. I was naturally intrigued as some years back I had spent sometime researching Lord Mountbatten’s role in initiating the Kashmir dispute. On publication, this book received significant attention in the British press because of its apparent revelations about Lord Mountbatten’s sexuality.
